This was a reading group book and I wasn't enthusiastic to read it and nearly didn't. And yet stuck with nothing else in easy reach I started it and before I know it I'm a third through and finish it the next day. It is surprisingly good. It is SO not my usual fare but I really enjoyed and even had a little cry at the end. The characters are well written. Peter in particular, suffering from what would be now called post traumatic stress, both from an appalling childhood and 5 years as a Japanese POW, is fascinating. ( )
