Sometimes it’s ok to do things backwards and it was ok listening to Volume 2 of Dreamsongs before Volume 1. I’m not even going to bother with the print edition of this one. The editions are totally out of sync anyway. See my volume 2 review. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/417730.Dreamsongs_Volume_IIWhat did I get to listen to? Check out Jason Penney's review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/21234659 for the list of titles. My comment expresses my appreciation.Positives:It was interesting to hear the author himself explain where he was, what he was doing, and what he was thinking when he wrote a story. I not only saw his skills and career grow, but experienced the process, almost like a remote participant.I enjoyed all the stories, even his early fan fiction, but my favorites wereA Song For LyaThe Way Of Cross And Dragon The Exit To San BretaNegatives: None.Comments:The Fortress is Under SiegeI almost stopped listening to The Fortress because I thought I had heard it before. What I had heard was also by George R.R. Martin; Under Siege, the same story with a time traveler added. The Fortress is strictly historical, well, historical fiction, with no SF in it. It was interesting enough that I researched the actual historical event. It wasn’t as straightforward as I’d thought. Narrators• Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series is read by Roy Dotrice And when I hear his voice, I’m sent to that universe. It didn’t seem natural in outer space. • Scott Brick takes me to the Dune universe but his voice fit both And Death His Legacy or The Exit to San Breta. • Accents can be tricky, sounding phony, or worse, stereotypical. Mark Bramhall’s Scandinavian accents in The Fortress worked for me, but I might not know any better despite my surname. • Adrian Paul’s alien voices in The Stone City were outstanding and his over the top theatrics in Only Kids are Afraid of the Dark was perfect for an exuberant fanzine. The Exit To San BretaI’ve tried to convince myself the road noise from a nearby Interstate highway can be romantic like a train’s whistle or a ship’s horn or a clipper ship’s flapping sails. I’ve wondered if future generations will forget the pollution, gridlock, accidents, road rage... and remember convertibles, Sunday drives, trucker songs, drive-ins, Little Deuce Coupe....? The Exit to San Breta gave me an answer. It begins with a beautifully evocative and sensual paean to our current highway system that remains as the story unfolds. After listening to it you might want to check out my Driving Is Dangerous site at http://drivingisdangerous.blogspot.com/If you know of any other stories with this motif, please let me know. I want to appreciate my highway. ( )
