This was another very well told story in this Prairie Winds series. I highly recommend you read "Walks the Fire" first because it gives you so much background and insight into this second story.

LisBeth King's life is torn apart at the beginning of this story with her grief over her husband being murdered at 'Custer's last stand' and then returning home to find her mother (who was the main character in book one) has passed away also. She finds little comfort in her Christian faith that her Mother raised her in and finds herself floundering to find her place in life.

Then there is Soaring Eagle, the angry Sioux warrior whose life has also been destroyed through the white man taking over his land and people. He must come to terms with accepting what is happening and showing people he can change with the times. This will not be easy for this brave warrior, who is also LisBeth's brother who she has yet to meet.

Finally you will also get to know Jim Callaway, a man who has seen too much killing of innocent women and children among the Indian tribes. He has fled from his military duties and is seeking answers. All three of these individuals are very different, but they are all searching to find that "peace that passes all understanding". I enjoyed each of their journeys to finding that peace and how the Lord brings them all together in a very special way.

The author knows how to weave a great story of faith and love during a time when there was much hate and lack of understanding between the white man and the Indians. This is a series that I will remember reading long after I have finished; and book 3, "Red Bird", is next on my list. ( )
