Cassandra never set out to be a psychic, least of all a famous one, with her very own magazine column, plus a glamorous TV slot thrown in for good measure. Let's face it, it's not exactly the usual career choice a girl might make, now is it? But whether she likes it or not, ever since Cassandra was a little girl she's been able to see into the future. While she can make predictions with 100 per cent accuracy for everyone around her, her psychic gift floats right out the window whenever there's a D.S.M. (decent single man) around that she actually fancies herself especially when that D.S.M happens to be her hot, new TV producer boss.It seems even being able to foretell the future can't protect Cassandra from what destiny has in store. and sometimes fate won't let you look before you love...… (más)

What a lovely instance of magical realism! Unobtrusive, but added a new layer that created a unique premise.

Now, why Cassie remains friends with Chantal is a mystery to me, and it seems a bit sad that Marc with a C never found his own love story or escaped his C, but overall this was a fun read. I think I've been spoiled recently with chick-lit that actually promotes women though; there was very much an undertone here that everyone needs to be in a relationship to be happy, which isn't true. I really enjoyed this book.
I have read a few psychic books where there are murders happening all over and the psychic is keeping her gifts hidden as she scoffs at being believed. I have read a few where they are tortured souls and struggle with their visions. This one was refreshingly different.
Cassie has always had a gift and everyone around her is always asking her for help.
It starts off her as s 7 year old seeing matches for her mom's friend.
It goes on to her being a psychic advice aunt in a magazine a later a call in host at a live chat show.
I liked this handling.
Cassie ,Charlene, Marc with a C were all chaacters that were totally overboard and entertaining.
All in all a fun read ( )

After reading the rather depressing classic, The House of Mirth, I needed something light and I Never Fancied Him Anyway was just the thing. Set in Dublin, I Never Fancied Him Anyway follows Cassandra as she tries to avoid falling for her best friend’s crush although her never-before-wrong psychic abilities tell her he’s the one. Complicating matters, she is offered a position as a talk show psychic working for her crush. This situation is made even more awkward when Cassandra realizes that her psychic powers take a vacation whenever her crush is around!

Although the situation has much potential for horribly embarrassing situations, there aren’t too many cringe worthy moments. I was glad, because being embarrassed for the protagonist is not a sensation I enjoy. The protagonist’s psychic powers were quite well done. They were never over-the-top or hokey and they obeyed believable rules. They weren’t just a plot device to stir up her love life; they were really a part of who she was. The ethical dilemmas she faces trying to decide what predictions to share added a little something which helped differentiate this book from all the other chick-flick plots out there.

The characters were by far my favorite part of this book. While some of them could be viewed as stereotypes (a spoiled rich girl, an environmentalist and feminist angry best friend), I would say that the author used stereotypes as a scaffold to which more depth was added. Every character had a unique voice, even bit characters who just wrote letters to our protagonist’s advice column. And each of these unique voices felt very real, perhaps in part because of pop culture references sprinkled throughout the dialog.

As an American, I also derived a certain enjoyment from the Dubliner accents and the clearly European words used throughout. Like the protagonist’s psychic abilities, it just added a little something to make this book stand out for me. It also helped that this book was precisely what I was in the mood for when I read it, so I would particularly recommend it if you’re also in the mood for a light, fun read. ( )
