Ancient England is a sweeping survey of English history, as told through magnificent photographs of landscapes, castles, and other buildings, with accompanying text. Its time frame spans over 6000 years, from the Neolithic inhabitants of prehistory through the early 1700s. Initial chapters illustrate early stone structures and earthworks (such as those left behind at Avebury, Stonehenge, and Salisbury), followed by remains of the Bronze and Iron ages. The Roman empire left its mark in such constructions as Hadrian’s Wall and the public baths of western England, among the many features illustrated herein. The post- Roman period was characterized by hundreds of years of raiders and invaders -- notably the Germanic tribes and the Vikings -- whose presence is evident herein from crumbling castles, monuments, and earthworks. The Norman conquest was followed by the establishment of a succession of monarchal clans (Plantagenets, Tudors, Stuarts), punctuated by civil wars and conflicts with France. The complex history of these 10 centuries is well documented herein with photographs of important historical sites.

While this volume encapsulates the entire span of known English history, its main attraction lies with with its illustrative photographs. One small drawback is that the photos and text complement each other, but are not well - integrated. Another is that the text concentrates on conflicts and monarchal succession to the exclusion of other information about English history and peoples. However, the latter is understandable, given the focus of the photographs on castles and other edifices -- and what magnificent photographs they are!

This book will be a welcome addition to the libraries of prospective travelers and anyone interested in historic England. ( )
