Fifty years ago, Hammer Films released The Curse of Frankenstein. The now-legendary British company went on to make such classics as Dracula (and its many sequels), making international stars out of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, changing the face of horror cinema, and inspiring a generation of Hollywood filmmakers, including George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Now, for the first time, Hammer have given their active backing to an authorised history of the company, and have provided unlimited access to their archives. The Hammer Story provides a film-by-film dissection, dripping with rare promotional material and previously unpublished photographs.… (más)

You don't need to be a Hammer Films fan to enjoy this tasty volume. Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Oliver Reed are here in their full gory glory. The authors do an exceptional job on making the book as colorful as the Hammer flicks were, with lots of color photographs and lobby cards. Each film has a full section with the plot synopsis and behind-the-scenes gossip. For the cinema fan, this should be a must-have book for the library.

Next to McFarland’s Hammer Filmography this is my other favourite book on Hammer Films. Written by the writers and editors for the excellent, but short lived Marvel Hammer Horror Magazine this is a fanboy’s delight with excellent introductory chapters about Hammer’s Horror movies, favourite actors and actresses, directors and forays into other genres and choke full of beautiful colour and black and white photos. The book has proved so popular that it has since been reprinted in different formats. This is a Must Have on your shelf. ( )

A very well produced history of Hammer Films that includes: film synopsis, production dates, release dates, ratings, film durations, actors, scriptwriters, directors and interesting behind the scenes stories for all of the science fiction and horror productions. Film genres such as war, thriller, and comedy are described in two page summaries. There are short inset biographies of the more prominent Hammer film stars, directors and writers within the descriptions of their better known contributions. Even the rather limited television programming produced by Hammer is explored. A must have for anyone interested in Hammer Films and the best book I have seen on the subject. ( )
