Merri Walters had a settled life, she was a teacher and happy in her job until a sinus infection turned into deafness. Permanent deafness. Somehow she quickly learned to read lips and found herself working in the police archives. Then she found a cold case and had an idea how to root out the killer. She informs the police and they're surprised to learn that she's involved. Then they hatch a plan to use her to get information on a crime boss by infiltrating his home as a maid. Her supervisor Detective Steven Barlow, to whom she is a bit attracted, doesn't like the plan but goes along with it anyway. To complicate matters she also finds herself attracted to one of the crime bosses goons!

Some of the story does stretch credulity a bit but it's quite readable and light. ( )
