Mother Earth awakens her three Spring daughters - March, April and May - in this third picture-book in author Lynn Plourde and illustrator Greg Couch's quartet of stories about the four seasons and their celestial parents, Mother Earth and Father Time. The three Spring sisters cannot seem to get along, each striving to be the best, until finally their mother must remind them that each of them is most beloved...

Like Wild Child and Winter Waits before it, Spring's Sprung pairs a magical tale of nature and time with gorgeous illustrations. I don't know that I found the actual text here as accomplished as in the others - it sometimes didn't read very well, actually - but I enjoyed the story idea and artwork so much that I still found the book appealing. I really appreciate the idea of anthropomorphizing the seasons as the children of Mother Earth and Father Time, as the seasons are, quite literally, the product of time passing in the natural world. The accompanying artwork, done in acrylic paint and colored pencil, captures the fairy-tale feeling of the story. Recommended to anyone who has read any of the other stories about this 'family,' and to picture-book readers looking for celebrations of Spring. ( )

I love this book. I love the colors in it. The three spring sisters are frustrated they don't know which one their mother loves the best. So they keep having races to find out and it ends up that the sisters find out that their mother loves them all equally. They wake up the day, and at the end of the day, they call their sister summer to come and play. Reviewed by Emma VanDyne.

I like this book a lot. Illustrator Greg Couch outdoes himself with these wonderful double page spreads filled with purples, blues, pinks and greens of Springtime. One can feel the cool, breezy sunlit atmosphere that is fresh and lively and does one's heart good. The story examines the intense sibling rivalry of the three Spring sisters, March, April and May, the daughters of Mother Earth. Each girl wants to be the first, the best, the most beloved, and let's face it, they just woke up, so they're really in rare form with their crabbiness! Mother Earth chides them but gives equal loving approval for their accomplishments and unique qualities. In the end the girls rise to the joyous vibrations of Spring and the world is a brighter, happier place as, confident in their mother's love, they drop their rivalry. The illustrations are truly fabulous and the story while at first exhibiting a not-so-pretty side of human nature ends up affirming family love and celebrating cooperation. ( )
