Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

It's the last inning of a high school baseball game between arch-rivals Oak Grove and Compton. Center fielder Luke "Wizard" Wallace steps up to the plateâ??and is hit by a beanball, a wild pitch that shatters his skull, destroys the vision in his left eye, and changes his life forever.

In this riveting novel, the events surrounding this pivotal moment are recounted through free-verse monologues by 28 different voices, including those of Luke and his Oak Grove teammates; the pitcher, Kyle Dawkins, and other Compton players; the two coaches; Luke's family members and teachers; and Sarah Edgerton, a new classmate who seems more affected by Luke's injury than his girlfriend is.

With its unusual format, gripping subject matter, and economy of language, Beanball is a thought-provoking, fast-paced read.… (más)

First, I LOVE baseball and actually read this on the way home from a Seattle Mariner game, so this book was right up my alley, topic-wise! That being said, I thought it was only okay. The book uses free-verse poems from 20+ perspectives in order to tell the story of a baseball tragedy. Luke "the Wizard" is destined to become a sports hero; he's the stuff that sports legends are made of! That is, until he's hit in the face by an opposing team, losing his eyesight in one eye. The book has several parts, from pre-game, to the incident, to the aftermath.

Because it's told from SO MANY perspectives, it might be hard to follow. I'm not sure if the free verse adds much in the sense of style, mood, readability, etc. The plot was intense, but a bit predictable. It would be a good book for someone interested in sports, and it would be easier to keep all of the characters straight if the reader knows enough about baseball; it helps to think of positions and keep narrators organized that way instead of names. For example, one character is name Dawson and one is Dawkins. I kept getting confused at first, but then I decided to use their team/position to help me differentiate them as I read. ( )

Luke Wallace suffers a major injury. The novel uncovers how he heals and how it affects the people around him. Luke Wallace is inured playing his favorite sport. Kyle Dawkins was responsible for Luke's injury. Andy Keller is conflicted because he is starting now. Overall I think this book was in the middle. It was alright because it was Baseball. I didn't like it because there is to many characters. I dis liked it because this happen to a MLB player. The book was OK but there wasn't that much Baseball action so I don't recommended it. ( )

Luke Wallace suffers an injury. The novel uncovers how he heals and how it affects the people around him. Luke Wallace in injured playing his favorites sport. Kyle Dawkins was responsible for Luke's injury and ultimately quits the team due to guilt. Andy Keller is conflicted because he gets moved to the starting line up at the expense of his friend. overall I thought book was not good I don't like the way it ends. It was not fun to read and I find it sick because of Melody. I am not sure if I would recommend this book for other students or not. ( )

Luke Wallace gets hit in the faces while playing baseball and suffers an injury/ how does this affect him and the people around him. Kyle Dawkins, is the one that hits him with the ball while playing the game it was a mistake and he didn't mean to hit him then he has to deal with everything thoughts about him and feels so bad, Andy Keller is Luke's best friend and sees everything he goes without his best friend for a long time, over I think the book was OK it was hard to understand with all the people but I like the way it was set up,2 things I liked was how it was set up and and how it stayed on one thing most of the time, 1 thing i disliked was there was two many people to keep trake of.
