"In 1985 The Beans of Egypt, Maine came into this world, the unique creation of Carolyn Chute. A microcosm, Egypt instantly became part of America's fictional landscape. Three years later Ms. Chute gave us, in Letourneau's Used Auto Parts, a further - and broader - take on a world in miniature." "But hold on. In Merry Men Egypt, Maine, is not so small, as Chute demonstrates so tellingly in her lamination of that society. There are the Barringtons, a classic Egypt clan, complete with Unk Walty, who does all the cooking and devotes his spare time to constructing lifelike and life-size sculptures of the denizens of the area, and his nephew, Lloyd, who at age 8 and 3/4 is widely - and rightly - known as Super Tree Man." "On to the upper middle class, as exemplified by the family of Dr. William Curry, who has just died. How his widow, Phoebe, and his assorted children deal with the sudden loss is, to put it mildly, a wonder to behold." "This is only the beginning of Carolyn Chute's saga, an epic in which she remarkably pulls together all the strands until we have before us an amazing and coherent and altogether rewarding picture of a place unlike any other but eerily similar to most."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This is the fourth of Chute's books that I've read – the others being The Beans of Egypt, Maine (of course), LeTourneau's Used Auto Parts, and Treat Us Like Dogs and We Will Become Wolves – and this so far is absolutely the best. It gives a much more comprehensive view of Egypt, and a far greater cast of characters, and definitely makes me want to go back and reread The Beans and LeTourneau's now that these two have been placed in context.

And, obsessively compulsively, I'm inclined to do a family tree of the blood and marital relationships of all the characters in Chute's "Egypt, Maine" series, which has taken on the scope and quality of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. ( )

Spoiler Alert: Some key plot elements may be revealed below.

Chute's 700-page epic brings the notorious Bean family back to at least peripheral focus as she reveals that an entire multi-faceted community is, indeed, her main character. Toward the end of this book, we learn that Earlene has made peace with Ruben Bean and continues to bear him many babies. In fact, the Beans take on a golden glow of lumpen-working class virtue and closeness to nature in contrast to the apparent cruelty of central character Lloyd Barrington.

Ruben Bean's rages and violence have nothing on Lloyd's methodical coldness, over a period of years, as he endeavors to confront his upper-class lover with the irregularities surrounding her father's death. Is class hatred and resentment his motivation? Or is he sincerely convinced that she must "see the body" (so to speak) in order to escape denial? Either way, the hapless little rich girl has a hard shock in store.

Would the lower-class heroines who thickly populate the the novel's numerous subplots approve of such cruel methods? I would say not, but Chute makes clear that women's views count for very little. ( )

Reading Carolyn Chute is an act of class warfare. I admire her. This is a huge book, which often wanders aimlessly, but the overall impact is overwhelming. We need more of her. ( )

The breaking waves dash'd high On a stern and rock-bound coast. And the woods against a stormy sky Their giant branches toss'd. -Felicia Dorothea Hemans "The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers in New England"

Please let me honor here all the farmers who still work the land themselves, who are not agribusinessmen or agribusinesswomen, but farmers, who know family and community interdependence...America's last vestiges of freedom. And honor to all those millions who were born to be farmers, as they ahbe been for thousands of years, but because of modern "education." Big Business, and Mechanization they cannot be and will never know their true gift but are instead herded into welfare lines, prisons, or the slavery of Big Business...may they find it-the gift-in another life, another world.

It was a poor piece of land but they made it feed them...potatoes and certain beans...,and there were deer and in time, apples.
