I really did enjoy the book. I think the character Ben is wonderful. The characters of the mentally handicapped were written with kindness and sweetness. I know so little about Florida but the author added some history and some interesting facts. ( ) In the novel "A Gentle Rain," by Deborah Smith, the reader is treated to an engaging, inspiring story of emotional healing and triumph of the human spirit. After the untimely death of both of her parents, Kara Whittenbrook makes several life-changing discoveries. First she receives an ample inheritance from her wealthy parents. Then, as she is sorting through their belongings after their loss, she discovers adoption papers with her name on them. This causes her to ask many questions and struggle to discover the meaning of it all- both from her family and loved ones, and within herself. Kara's journey unfolds fortuitously as she seeks to reconnect with her loved ones and birth parents, while also trying to make sense of her own internal struggle and grief. The story is well told, vividly descriptive, and deeply moving. The way Deborah Smith describes the beautiful landscape and picturesque scenery makes it come alive on the page. Reading about the areas Kara experienced in the book, spurred a strong curiosity within this reviewer to want to visit and see them firsthand. From the tropical rainforest of Brazil, to the sprawling, scenic ranch in North Florida, of all places, her writing about Kara's experiences in these places is captivating and engaging. The supporting characters are given life and fairly well developed. This is particularly true of Kara's birth parents, as well as glimpses into her well-heeled, but at times emotionally distant, up-bringing with her adoptive parents. There is also a romantic interest in the book, the affable rancher Ben Thocco, that will not disappoint romance novel fans. Ben has an endearing compassion for a small group of ranch hands with varying disabilities, including Down Syndrome, whom he takes under his wing. This is one of the best recently written novels I have read- I whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging story of a young woman overcoming challenges and loss to find faith, hope, and love anew! First book read by this author and I must say she has written a wonderful touching romance. A wealthy young woman, Kara Whittenbrook finds out she was adopted when her adoptive parents are killed in an airplane crash. She finds out who her real parents are and sets off to discover why she was given up for adoption. Her biological parents live and work in Florida for a kind hearted rancher Ben Thocco. Kara takes an assumed name of “Karen Johnson” and drops by the ranch to make inquiries. One thing leads to another, and she becomes one of the family and is loved by all. If you want to read a tender love story, this is for you. I just love happy endings. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Kara Whittenbrook is an unlikely heiress. Down-to-earth and lovably quirky. She's never fit in with the stodgy Whittenbrook clan of Connecticut. Growing up at her parents' rainforest preserve in Brazil, she has a quaintly off-beat view of life. Now her beloved parents have died in a plane crash, and Kara's learned a stunning truth. She was adopted. Her birth parents are Mac and Lily Tolbert. They live and work on a backwoods cattle ranch in northern Florida. Ranch owner Ben Thocco is running out of time and money. He is going to need a miracle in order to save the ranch and care for the likable crew of unusual hands he employs, including Kara's parents and his own fragile brother, Joey.
