When college instructor Sam Hall and his children, Phineas and Althea move from Oregon to Portland, Maine, they encounter new experiences and a mystery. Mrs. Hall stays behind in Oregon to pursue a high-powered job working long hours for a congressman.

Phineas is twelve, an avid cyclist, and the younger sibling of fifteen-year-old Althea, who has a deep interest in learning Greek.

After Instructor Hall becomes curator of Egyptian artifacts, the mummy is stolen. Then Althea disappears! Neither Phineas nor Althea is circumspect in their actions which makes The Vandemark Mummy a great middle school adventure!! ( )

Voigt, Cynthia, The Vandemark Mummy, When, as the new Classics professor at Vandemark College, their father is made responsible for a collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts just bequeathed to the college, twelve-year-old Phineas and his older sister Althea try to find out why the collection is the target of thieves, especially when the mummy disappears. It's not a terribly valuable mummy, but its disappearance spells big trouble for their father. A whispered phone call leads Phineas and Althea to the vandalized mummy without revealing the identity of the thief. Then someone far more important to Phineas than a fifteen-hundred-year-old mummy vanishes. In spite of what the police think, he knows his sister would not have run away, and he knows she's in grave danger. But can he unravel the mystery in time to save her life? ( )
