Excerpt from Who Shall Survive?: A New Approach to the Problem of Human InterrelationsI have given the above illustration because it seems that it might be within the experience Of almost every reader to have Observed something Closely similar, and to warn the reader that in approaching the contents Of this book he must not expect to find society or social groups considered as if they con sisted of the sum Of the individuals composing them. Wher ever two Or more people are functioning as a social group that group not only consists Of those individuals, but, more impor tant perhaps, if that is possible, than the individuals them selves and without which their functioning as a social group could not be expressed, are the relations which maintain between them. It is these intangible, imponderable and invisible aspects Of the Situation which enable the mathemati cal sum Of a certain number Of individuals to function as a social group. Dr. Moreno's book might be described briefly as a study Of these relations between individuals. TO qualify this description still further, it might be added that it is a study Of the emotional relations between individuals who are functioning as a social group, or, as I have Often chosen to call them, the cross-currents Of emotion as they play back and forth between individuals.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
