One of my favorite books as a young person, and probably still my most-reread (15 ). ( ) 13 year old Helen and her 9 year old brother, Michael, accompany their mother on an Artic expedition aboard the Karluk in 1913. Their mother, who is widowed and unemployed is hired as a seamstress, sewing boots, coats, bags, and other items as needed as the crew ventures into the Arctic. Recording her feelings and experiences in a diary, Helen and Michael befriend the ship’s crew, survive the ships sinking, spend months stranded on the ice, and eventually make it back to land. .Michael learns Inuit as he hangs around Kataktovick and the dog team. Helen;s diary is rescued by the Captain as the ship sinks. When they are shipwrecked, they survive on icebreakers and make the trek towards land and safety. Interesting and for the most part well-written. Although I'm sure Walters invented the attributes and attitudes of the two children (and fairly certain that 11 year olds 100 years ago did not exclaim "No way!"), according to his historical note there were in fact two children on that ill-fated expedition. A nice exception to the usual historical fiction practice of inserting fictitious children on the flimsiest of excuses. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Helen is not entirely sure she is looking forward to spending the next six months on board the Karluk, a ship headed on an Arctic expedition. But with the recent death of her father, it is the only work her seamstress mother can find. Helen's nine year-old brother, Michael, is delighted to be off on a real adventure but neither he nor Helen could have realized just how extraordinary this trip would be. The ship's hard-bitten captain, Robert Bartlett, must use all his seafaring skill when the ship becomes trapped in ice. In the pages of her diary, Helen records the fate of the crew and her family as they leave the ship and try to make their way across shifting ice flows, through blinding blizzards and past polar bears to safety.
