Chimera is one of the more unusual titles in the Ignatz series from Fantagraphics Books. It is almost entirely wordless, and charts the path through a dream filled with rich movement and ever-changing landscapes. The first installment is nothing special taken on its own merits, but contains the thread of a narrative strand that may well evolve into something quite interesting with following volumes. Long a superstar in his native Italy, Lorenzo Mattotti has made sporadicincursions into the U.S. via appearances in RAW magazine, the classicFires graphic novel, and the more recent, 2003 Eisner-winning Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde adaptation from NBM. (Not to mention regular gigs inThe New Yorker.) All of these previous works have showcased hisfull-color painter style, but Chimera, with its intricate,hyper-expressive swirls of crisp line work, shows that Mattotti's genius isbound by no single technique. A wordless fantasia of birth, death, gods, monsters, and humans, Chimera is the most astonishing visual narrativeyou'll see all year. "A beautiful stream-of-consciousness bit of fantasy... any fan of greatcartooning owes it to themselves to seek out this comic." -Sequart No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
