Since this book was written in the dark days before the internet existed, it is unfortunately not all that useful as a tool of genealogical research. At least for sometime trying to figure out whether or not great-great granddad served in the Civil War, and/or in what capacity. (Note that the 1989 edition is an "updated" version of a first edition published in 1975.)

Having said that, it does give some useful book titles in the bibiliography, and I presume the section on trying to figure out what to pay for Civil War artifacts would still also be useful as a general guide. Perhaps the best and most relevant bits of the book are the anecdotes where the author again and again demonstrates his enthusiasm for the topic and the bibilography of source documents, which presumably also still exist.
