Title: Lizard and the Painted Rock
Author: Elizabeth Lane
Summary of Book: This book is a children’s book about a Lizard who did not feel very important because his friends the rabbit and turtle had been painted on a rock. The lizard thought to himself, I must not be very important because I did not get myself painted on the rock. He thought why not paint a picture of himself. He tried and tried painting himself on the rock until the artist came back and made him feel important.
Personal Reaction: I chose this children’s book to fit under the modern fantasy genre because of the talking animals. I think this book is a very cute and suitable book for young children. This story takes place in the desert and the main character is the lizard. One of the reasons I like this book so much is because it has meaning to it and it relates to everyday life. Sometimes as individuals we do not feel important until that special person makes us feel important. The illustrations in this book are done in lots of green, purples, and oranges. The illustrations really set the mood of a desert.
Extension Ideas:
1. Have the students make a paper mache’ lizard.
2. Have the students paint a portrait of themselves on a poster board and display them outside the classroom in the hall.
