NA The Settlement Cookbook, first published in 1901, with 34 subsequent revised editions, clearly and simply provides all the basic information that every cook needs to know about cooking and nutrition. In addition, some sections are focused on common allergies, infant care, menus and advice on a myriad of other household/hostess activities. Over a century later, this cookbook is still in publication and cherished by cooks who use it. What is exemplary about this cookbook is the array of recipes that use readily obtained ingredients, involve minimal preparation time, and always result in delicious food to eat. Although I have over 100 cookbooks, this is my primary reference whenever I have a question about a recipe from another source. I have no favorite recipe from this book -- they all are my favorites! Perhaps the staying power of this cookbook is that it was an outgrowth of the "settlement reform movement", which was to improve the lives of the poor and the large immigrant population to the USA in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The basic elements of that movement are still valid and relevant in today's world. The Settlement Cookbook embodies the health and nutrition objectives of that time, and which are still with us today: Improving life through optimum nutrition with minimum time and expense. I highly recommend this cookbook to both beginning and experienced cooks. Be careful with editions if you purchase this. The 1903 version was reprinted & seems popular on Ebay - it is a thin paperback without a lot of recipes & NO TEMPERATURES since it was written for wood stove cooking. It's interesting & generally inexpensive, but not much help. My mother-in-law gave my wife a copy of this when we got married & we did the same for my daughter-in-law. It's not a fancy cookbook. It covers all aspects of cooking with excellent references such as a meat chart showing where various cuts come from, conversion charts for liquid & dry measures & weights. It covers the basics of cooking & has a lot of simple recipes that are tasty, but nothing fancy. As an overall cookbook, it's excellent. Good for beginners & a standard reference for those who have been cooking for decades. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
