HTML:A magnificent tale of death and destiny, past and present, in an Ireland rich with tradition, myth, and mystery: "Lake of Sorrows has a heft and richness uncommon in contemporary suspense novels" (Minneapolis Star-Tribune). /> American pathologist Nora Gavin has come to the Irish midlands to examine a body unearthed at a desolate spot known as the Lake of Sorrows. As with all the artifacts culled from its prehistoric depths, the bog has effectively preserved the dead man's remainsâ??his multiple wounds suggest he was the victim of an ancient pagan sacrifice known as "triple death." But signs of a more recent slaying emerge when a second body, bearing a similar wound pattern, is foundâ??this one sporting a wristwatch.
Someone has come to this quagmire to sink their dreadful handiworkâ??and Nora soon realizes that she is being pulled deeper into the land and all it holds: the secrets to a cache of missing gold, a tumultuous love affair with archaeologist Cormac Maguire, and the dark mysteries and desires of the workers at the site. As they draw closer to the truth, Nora and Cormac must exercise the utmost caution to avoid becoming the next victims of a ruthless killer fixated on the gruesome notion of trip… (más)
This was less interesting than the first one. It seemed to get off track and be more prosaic in terms of the author getting philosophical via the characters. Also Nora seemed almost secondary to the plot through parts of this. The current murder mystery was in the forefront and the ancient one took a serious back seat, almost to the point of an afterthought which needed fifty extra pages to wind up because it had been left to languish during the book.
I'm hopeful the next novel will be more on track. ( )
This was a good mystery. Great setting, and a story that didn’t give away too much of the ‘who dunnit’ end. Hart seems to want you to think one person is the culprit, and then springs someone else on you out of the blue. Kinda makes it hard to guess who was the murderer, but that is also part of the fun of a mystery novel.
I really enjoyed this book. I like to read about Ireland, since I am of Irish roots. Learning something about the bogs is very interesting as I knew nothing about them. I have read books with great characters, and though some of characters here are not super in depth I still found myself having feelings toward them. I like Nora, tho she can be frustrating. I guess I like Cormac, he might need a little more depth. I did not like Ursula or Rachel but I found myself concerned for Charlie. So, I think if one has some feeling towards the characters then they are written fairly well. ( )
During the book, Nora seems incapable of making up her mind whether to stay with Cormack, or to return to her family. I found myself wanting to shout at her. This could be a testament to the character development of the author ( )
