An excellent book, in my opinion. The author writes clearly, explaining some of his theories about life, psychotherapy, spirituality and more. He manages to avoid the extremes of either technical jargon or condescension as he writes to educate the general public.

Much of what he wrote made a lot of sense to me, helping me see (among other things) why some people are difficult to understand or communicate with. Written from a broadly Christian perspective but with the emphasis on personal choice, and acknowledgement of many religious paths during the process of growth.

Highly recommended. Not necessary to have read the author's first book.

"The single greatest cause of inappropriate blaming is the combination of a strong will with the lack of submission to a higher power. A strong will is I believe the best asset that a human being can possess. Not because it guarantees success or goodness, but because a weak will pretty much guarantees failure. It is strong willed people who do well in psychotherapy...." ( )

The book is grouped into three books. Book one was necessary to lay a foundation but I found it difficult to enjoy. Books two and three were more focused on Dinah and I was completely immersed. The places, era, and use of biblical persons added to the story.
This was recommended to me and I'm glad I followed the advice. ( )

This had me gripped right from the very first pages. The story of Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah, sister of Joseph and his 9 brothers and how her destiny was formed. The Red Tent is the story of the women, of the secrets and rituals they held and the pleasures and tragedies each lived. Dinah is the only daughter mothered by Jacob's four wives and because of that, she is petted and adored by all her mothers. She learns the way of midwifery from her mother Rachel and the guidance of Inna - a midwife who joins Jacob's train. This is a tragedy and there were definitely places where I just could not believe what I was reading, but it still held me wanting to read more. It gives a believable idea of what life would have been like for the women of the era, how, before Judaism and the other major religions were properly formed, different people and tribes accepted and embraced other gods, or certainly lived in respect of other's beliefs. Dinah's fate is that of a girl who is forced to grow up too quickly in a cruel world, where her greatest love becomes the root of misery for many. Beautifully written, engaging characters and evoking a huge amount of sympathy from the reader, I highly recommend this novel. ( )
