It is 1947, and Shirley Temple Wong and her mother travel from China to New York where her father has been living and working. Shirley is happy to have her family together again at last, but she has difficulty adjusting to life in a new country with its new customs and language. When she discovers baseball and learns about Jackie Robinson, the first black American to play in the major leagues, Shirley begins to understand how America is truly a land of opportunity.
