Lectures on Faith has been a cherished book since I was a teen-ager. I memorized a bit of it, and recite it from time to time. However, it wasn’t until this week that I read the whole book again for the second time. It was delightful. Here is a favorite part.

Lecture 3
2 Let us here observe, that three things are necessary, in order that any rational and intelligent being may exercise faith in God unto life and salvation.
3 First, The idea that he actually exists.
4 Secondly, A correct idea of his character, perfections and attributes.
5 Thirdly, An actual knowledge that the course of life which he is pursuing, is according to his will. For without an acquaintance with these three important facts, the faith of every rational being must be imperfect and unproductive; but with this understanding, it can become perfect and fruitful, abounding in righteousness unto the praise and glory of God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I look forward to reading it more often hereafter. ( )

Modern readers will be unfamiliar with the rhetoric and pedagogy of the Lectures from 1835, but the principles are sound.

When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has for the truth’s sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God that he has been called to make this sacrifice because he seeks to do His will, he does know, most assuredly, that God does and will accept his sacrifice and offering and that he has not sought nor will he seek His face in vain.

The seven Lectures on Faith were originally deliveredin the winter of 1834-35 by Joseph Smith Jr. to a group of church elders gathering in the "School of the Prophets". They were originally included in the 1835 book The Doctrine and Covenants. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints later removed the lectures from the Doctrine and Covenants in 1921 and editions thereafter.
