In 1861 the Union tried to destroy the Gosport Navy Yard to prevent the Confederate Navy from using it, and the U.S.S. Merrimack was partially burned. The Confederate Navy rebuilt the ship as an ironclad which was named the C.S.S. Virginia. This ship had some early victories in early 1862. On March 9, 1862 it fought against the U.S.S. Monitor, another ironclad, in the Battle of Hampton Roads. This battle was considered a victory by both sides. The crew of the C.S.S. Virginia destroyed the ship by fire to prevent it from falling into Union hands. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
