The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures. A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants--from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys--except for Claire's rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before. When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire's quiet life is turned upside down--along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy--if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom--or with each other.… (más)

I have been searching for weeks for a feel good read, and finally I found one!

The story revolves around a family of women, in a small N. Carolina town, who possess a little magic. Clare has a way with the garden and edibles and she turns this into a successful catering business. Her sister, who left years ago suddenly returns with a daughter in tow. And there is Evanelle the crazy aunt who gets urges to give strange things to people. There are a host of other characters, there's just enough drama, and just enough romance. It reminded me a bit of the early Nora Roberts books.

It was short, it was sweet and it pulled me right in. There is a sequel and I have put it on my shelf for another time, when I just need a feel good read.

Chicken soup for the classic girl's soul. I read a number of heavier, older books but often want a break without sacrificing quality. Garden Spells is a highly descriptive read with a beautiful touch of magic, everyday people with everday problems and curious quirks. It is good light reading without being dreck. ( )

Short and sweet. It's basically Practical Magic (more the book than the movie). ( )

Loved it! ( )

I know when a book is five-stars for is when even though I want to find out what will happen at the end of the story, at the same time, I don't want the book to end. But this time, I am lucky because Garden Spells has a sequence that I am looking forward to my own soon and whatever Sarah Addison Allen has written and will write.
It's well written with great characterization, and it really gives a flavor of small-town life, both with its frustrations and joys. The story is both complex and simple all at once, and it's not really a love story; it's about two sisters who come to learn the truth of who they really are. The magical realism is perfectly handled with just a small touch here, and there that's never so bold as to make the story unreal but just strong enough to give it that sunshine glow.
I really enjoyed the apple tree that chucked apples at people, and the idea of making cakes with herbs to help other problems is a good one. ( )
