I enjoyed reading this book because it discusses Martin Luther King Jr's accomplishments and importance as its message. It began by telling the background of MLK as a child and how he developed as an adult. In chapter 3, Joanne Mattern, the author, included that at age 17, MLK admitted, "I want to be a minister, just like daddy." He realized that ministers were powerful people who could change the views of society. This contributed to the success of MLK. Later on, Mattern went on to discuss the segregation issues in southern cities, especially when transporting on buses. She included, "White people sat in the front of the bus, and black people sat in the back. If all seats were taken, black passengers had to give up their seats to white passengers." This introduced Rosa Parks, who was the first black female to speak her mind on this bus boycott issue. She was arrested because she did listen to the bus driver who told her to move. Towards the end of this biography, it is evident that MLK spoke to more than 20,000 people, in 1957, at the civil rights rally in Washington D.C. Newspapers were released and books were written about what he proclaimed in his speech. Six years later, MLK gave his "I Have a Dream" speech that attracted 250,000 people, where he exclaimed, "I have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Let freedom ring." The crowd was tremendously affected by his words and the rest is history. At 39 years old, MLK was murdered before leading another march. He was always afraid of being killed by an enemy. On the third Monday of every January, his birthday remains a national holiday in the U.S., where we recognize his achievements for our nation. Overall, reading about the efforts that MLK made is a way of perceiving his true character. This book highlights the importance of MLK as a young boy, who turned into being a remarkable, memorable man in honor of his father. With that being said, I would recommend this book to others as it signifies the Civil Rights Movement in America through a historical figure. ( )
