Ron Hansen's engrossing novel of the violent life and criminal exploits of the Dalton gang, as remembered by its last surviving member From his home in Los Angeles, an aging Emmett Dalton reminisces about his glory days in America's Wild West. Now sixty-five years old, and a Hollywood fixture, he makes a comfortable living selling stories of his earlier exploits to movie studios. But years before, he rode with his two brothers--charming, handsome, charismatic Bob, and the cold-eyed killer Grat, so wild and unpredictable that even his own family was afraid of him--committing brazen acts of robbery, bootlegging, and murder. As the last surviving member of the infamous Dalton gang, it's Emmett's responsibility to keep their legend alive. He has resolved to tell the full truth about the fabled career of the three criminal brothers and Eugenia Moore, the former schoolmarm who was an indispensable partner in their crimes, even if that truth turns out to be a darker, more painful, and less heroic picture than Hollywood's moguls would make it out to be.   The critically acclaimed debut novel by bestselling author Ron Hansen, Desperadoes is a masterwork of historical fiction that brings a fabled era of American outlaws and violence to breathtaking life.… (más)

A longish fictional memoir of Emmett Dalton, the surviving member of the Dalton gang who worked in the film industry after he served 14 years of a life sentence. The story seems to follow other historical accounts that I have, except I am uncertain whether the details of Eugenia Moore's life and death required some extra fictionalization. ( )

I enjoyed this novel. It's about the Doolin gang, a descendant, of sorts of the James Younger Gang of Missouri. The focus is on the gang and their nemesis, Chris Madsen, a Danish immigrant with a great law-enforcement reputation. It was well deserved, and the book is a good read. ( )

very enjoyable, the key facts are all present with some fictional links to keep the story flowing but without detracting from the events. I would recommend this to anyone who has an inetest in the old west. It paints a picture of a harsh existance and does not try to glamourise the life of a wild west outlaw. ( )

Of that marauding band I am the sole survivor. The rest have gone these many years, with their boots on. In fact, I am one of the very few yet alive of that whole elder school of border outlaws whose kind rides no more. And now that I am dry behind the ears I have a yearning to tell truthfully the tale of the Daltons and others. . . .

But I have spent these last years in Hollywood, California, where I suppose I will sleep one night and pass on to glory in striped pajamas, with my mouth open, and with a dozen medicine bottles on the bedside vanity. It is 1937 and I am sixty-five years old and not the kind of man I started out to be . . . a true comeuppance for a desperado of the Old West, for the boy Emmett I was, and something to consider as I stood at night on my kelly-green lawn, a tinkling glass of ginger ale in my freckled, shaking hand.
I wasn't thinking that a coward would do this, a brave man some other thing. . . . [M]y brother Bob, whom I'd loved and been next to for twenty years, was sunk down and dying and there wasn't any question, no, I went after him.
"You miss your brother Bob a lot, don't you?"
"I miss all my brothers."
"But Bob especially?"
I squinted from the cigarette smoke. "I miss the past," I said.
