Bestselling author Iyanla Vanzant has had an amazing and difficult life -- one of great challenges that unmasked her wonderful gifts and led to wisdom gained. In this simple audiobook, she uses her own personal experiences to show how life's hardships can be re-languaged and re-visioned to become lessons that teach us as we grow, heal, and learn to love. The pain of the past does not have to be today's reality. Iyanla Vanzant is an example of how yesterday's tears become the seeds of today's hope, renewal, and strength.… (más)

The writer portrays a violent biography and a search for God. She mixes scripture with other mystic writings and states that there are many paths that lead to one road and that God didn't care if she was a Christian or not. If that were true then Christ did not need to die to make access to God possible. Christ is the only mediator between God and man and no one comes to God except by Him....and only Him. ( )

I was very disappointed in this book. I found her referring to herself as another person VERY distracting. It was confusing, and quite frankly, not particularly inspiring. ( )

Vanzant writes for black women, but her lessons apply to all to all women. In this book she unflinchingly tells her own story, from all-but-abandoned child to single mother to lawyer to successful writer and spiritual advisor. Reading about her struggle to learn to love herself I encountered many familiar feelings, and some unfamiliar because they'd been squashed down so deep. Vanzant's voice is formidable. I recommend this book for any woman who's getting less than she wants out of life and can't quite figure out why. ( )

Yesterday, I cried.
I came home, went straight to my room, sat on the edge of my bed,
kicked off my shoes, unhooked my bra,
and I had myself a good cry./

This book is dedicated to Ms. Oprah Winfrey, for your "holy boldness" and willingness to demonstrate to the world how to heal in public without losing God's grace or your own dignity;/ and to my children, Damon Keith, Gemmia Lynette, and Nisa Camille for all the yesterdays you cried when I didn't have enough compassion for myself, or the strength required to wipe your tears;/ and in loving memory of Sarah Jefferson, my mother,/Lynnette May Brown-Harris, my "Mommy" and best friend,/ Nancy McCullum, my aunt,/ Ruth Carlo, my first real sister.

Life hurts. Life is painful. Life is suffering./There is nothing in life that does not involve trial./There is nothing worthwhile that doesn't have a cost./Yet, we must go on./There is nothing great that does not require a series of small acts./We must persevere./If we do, good times are sure to follow./If we constantly seek, even in darkness,/guidance is sure to come./If we strive against evil, no matter what the cost,/righteousness is sure to triumph.
- Deng Ming-Dao, in 'Everyday Tao; Living with Balance and Harmony'

For the rest of my life there are two days/ that will never again trouble me./ The first day is yesterday with all its /blunders and tears, its follies and defeats./ Yesterday has passed away, beyond my control forever./The other day is tomorrow with its pitfalls/ and threats, its dangers and mystery./ Until the sun rises again, I have no stake in tomorrow,/ for it is still unborn.

-Og Mandino, in 'The Return of the Ragpicker'
