A brief overview of the cultural life of France - Paris in particular - during the Napoleonic era. Assumes a more in-depth knowledge of the period than one looking for a brief overview would possess. There is a lot of name-dropping and mention of battles that takes away from an appreciation of the writing. Though it does inspire me to want to read more. ( )
