Anthony Lukas (read 26 Aug 2019) This account of Watergate and nixon's misdeeds was published in 1976. I have read lots of books about Watergate and I followed avidly all the events from 1972 till Nixon's resignation as they unfolded. Why would I now read this old book? I remember how impressed I was by the two books by Lukas I have read heretofore: Big Trouble (read 30 Dec 1998)and and Common Ground (read 19 Aug 1999). And it is pertinent tp remember those exciting times, especially since some think the way to oppose the present White House occupant is to impeach him, even though any political realist knows conviction is impossible and that all effort should be to defeat him in 2020 and not waste resources on impeachment sure to be ineffective in removing him from office. This book does an excellent job showing the evils that Nixon's people perpetrated in 1971 and 1972. yet it is clear that without the tapes proving the cover-up Nixon would not have been gotten out of office. I was appalled anew by how much evil Nixon's underlings committed--and then in the middle of that we learn what an outright crook Agnew was continuously during his entire political life! One could not help but admire the careful work that Rodino and Ervin did in running their committees and forcing Nixon out of the presidency. I found the book, even after all these years, enthralling reading. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

In July 1973, for the first time in its history, the New York Times Magazine devoted a full issue to a single article: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist J. Anthony Lukas's account of the Watergate story to date. Six months later, a second installment ran in another full issue. Later the Times asked him to write a third issue, on the impeachment, which never appeared because of Nixon's intervening resignation. But all of Lukas's painstaking reporting on Nixon's last months in office appears here, along with added information on every aspect of Watergate. Widely acclaimed as a major text of the Watergate saga, J. Anthony Lukas's Nightmare is a masterwork of investigation, highlighted by in-depth character sketches of the key players. For students of history coming to these events for the first time, this book reveals in depth the particular trauma of a nation in turmoil; for those who remember, the upheaval and what was at stake are once more brought to life.
