Fantastic true story from the 1930s when the Brit's would take on anything that came their way. This time it is logging timber with elephants in unpredictable Burma and Siam. This was a 1957 hardback first edition. The writing just flows along and the style is perfect. The world doesn't make authors like this anymore.............. I love the words from the J H Williams forward "I am trustful by nature....... ...It is the man, terrified of being stabbed in the back, who is punched in the face. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

The expedition takes place sometime in the nineteen thirties. Williams was an expert in the use of elephants for forest felling. He worked for a company that exploited Burma's native forest wealth. One of the tasks before him was to evaluate the viability of using elephants in forest clearance on the Andaman Islands. Fortunately, this proved impractical through lack of suitable fodder and mechanized alternatives.
The story is full of action, danger and encounters with the fantastic wildlife to be found on the islands. Williams must manage convicts members of his expedition and gives a good account of himself as a resourceful leader and observer of men and nature.
