Recognized as a modern spiritual classic and perhaps Dietrich von Hildebrand's greatest work, this sublime and practical study gives a penetrating analysis of the true path to holiness for those who love Christ. The first requisite is the person's desire for change, and with that fundamental attitude in mind, von Hildebrand devotes a chapter to each of the successive spiritual attitudes necessary for those who strive for Christian perfection. An awesome book... one of a few that I've been able to get through on the spiritual life. It does really demand concentration, as he explores different virtues and what it means to exercise them so as to be transformed into Christ, but it's worth the effort. It really will impact the way you live. ( )

This book was such a toil, and I mean that in the best way possible. It kept me really tied to and involved with my faith, because it's such a long and dense work that you've got to focus and contemplate. Hildebrand's point throughout the book is our necessary surrender, becoming "fools for Christ," to fully recognize the strength and gravity of Christianity. Of all of the chapters - more or less, each focuses on a different virtue - my favorites were finding freedom in Christ, holy mercy, and holy sorrow. Hildebrand is a fantastic philosopher and theologian, and this is a very worthwhile read ( )

Originally a series of conferences given by Von Hildebrand after he fled Nazi Germany (where he was under sentence of death) this book makes the reader look into their own heart and bring about that transformation in Christ. A 20th Century spiritual classic that made Pope Pius XII call Von Hildebrand a 20th century Doctor of the Church. ( )
