"Sneeze" is a book that takes the reader though the process of producing a sneeze. The author gives a lot of scientific terminology which can build a young reader's vocabulary. The book even mentions how the sneezing sensation travels to the neurons in ones brain which gives depth to the process of putting a sneeze out of your body. The inside look to a simple sneeze, which every one does, is given to the reader with great detail. ( )

Sneeze! by Alexandra Siy is a fascinating science book detailing the physiology of the human sneeze. The photographs are amazing micrographs that detail all of the tiny particles that cause humans to sneeze. It also details all of the other reasons people sneeze, like viruses and allergens, and explains these all in a very simplistic fashion so that children can easily follow along. This would be an interesting book to introduce to the classroom to introduce science and explain a bodily function that everyone deals with on a regular basis. ( )

This is informative and gross at the same time. A book about sneezing you can only expect a little gross bodily function conversation. However this book is well written and uses vivid colors and images to grasp the readers attention. The story is set up in a way that nine kids discover different reasons for why people sneeze. The reader is being introduced to what causes one to sneeze while also clearly observing magnified images of such causes. This is a really interesting book is accompanied by multiple text features, images and other nonfiction elements that assist in the readers understanding of sneezes. I would love to use this book in my classroom, it would allow for higher level thinking and an interesting way to introduce topics of science in an engaging way, ( )

This is an awesome informational book. I really like the way the book is set up. Onn every page there is a photo with a “caption” a few sentences long, and on the adjoining page, there is a blown up photo of things that are invisible to the naked eye. This is useful to the book, because it enhances the text and allows for a better understanding. I also really like the organization of this book. The author put all of the bodily process that take place when someone sneezes, in order. For example, the book starts off with a girl smelling something, and as the book progresses, the author lists all the possible reasons for a sneeze, and what bacteria causes them. In the end, the girl sneezes. I the main idea of this book is to explain all the different cases of sneezes, and the biology behind each one.

Summary: This is an informational book about 9 kids that discover 9 reasons for sneezing. It not only explains the reason of sneezing but also includes zoomed in pictures of the reasons, ie dust mites and allergens.

Personal Reaction: I’m not a fan of books that include bodily functions; however I really enjoyed this one. The illustrations and zoomed in photos are really neat and my favorite part was how it described the different types of sneezes. It also teaches students to be mindful when sneezing and to be aware of germs.

Classroom Extension:

1) Have the school nurse come in and explain to the class ways to prevent becoming sick, ie washing hands, using hand santizer.

2) Have students draw their own versions of the germs that were included in the book and write a short description of the germ and what it does. ( )
