The introduction reassures us that this book is good for learning to dye in the home. The projects to knit with hand dyed yarn also include suggestions for commercially available yarn. We also are shown how to dye a project after it has been knit or how to dye skeins from a colour that you don’t like to one more pleasing to you. The projects indicate skill level.
She includes sections on: safety in dyeing, colour theory, tools, the dyes, techniques, the skeins, the yarns, (all natural fibres), and preparing the work area.
This book treats kinds of dyes and projects for each: unsweetened Kool-aid & food colouring, Ashford wool dyes, Kiton acid dyes, Jacquard acid dyes, PROCION MX, PRO washfast acid, PRO one shot.
Each process includes photographs, and is followed by an interview & photos with someone at work using this method including our own Koigu women. Maie advises someone dyeing yarn for the first time: Learn as much as you can about the yarn, the fibres, the dyes, the equipment you might need. Find a fibre you love and work with that.
This beautiful book certainly would go a long way to fulfilling this guidance.
