Fiction. Romance. Suspense. HTML:

On what is supposed to be a quiet long weekend in New Hampshire, Deputy U.S. Marshal Mackenzie Stewart is viciously attacked at the lakefront cottage of her friend, federal judge Bernadette Peacham. Mackenzie fends off her attacker, but he manages to escape. Everything suggests he's a deranged drifter--until FBI special agent Andrew Rook arrives.

With Rook, Mackenzie broke her own rule not to get involved with anyone in law enforcement, but she knows he isn't up from Washington, D.C., to set things straight between them. He's on a case.

As the hunt for the mysterious attacker continues, the case takes an unexpected turn when Mackenzie follows Rook back to Washington and finds that Bernadette's former mentor, a once-powerful, now-disgraced judge who has been providing Rook with information, has gone missing. Mackenzie and Rook realize the stakes are higher than either had imagined, and a master criminal with nothing left to lose is prepared to gamble everything.

I'll admit that I started this one 3 times before it grabbed me. Sometimes it just works that way. Once it hooked me I liked it and kept going. ( )

Deputy Marshal Mackenzie Stewart is attacked in New Hampshire at a lakeside cottage. FBI Special Agent Andrew Rook arrives shortly after the attack. He & Mackenzie had a few dates then he suddenly broke it off so she is confused on why he is there. Is he there for her or is he on a case? Rook doesn't think the attack on Mackenzie is random and could be linked to a case he is working on.
This is one of my favorite books in the US Marshal series. A master criminal is after several people he thinks double crossed him so there are several twists and turns in this story. ( )

The first Carla Neggers book I've read, the sixth in US Marshals series. I haven't read anything about US Marshals before. After reading this I still Know nothing about US Marshals. It was described as a romantic suspense novel, it was very weak as romance goes, over done characters, weak suspense, minimal plot, I only gave it one star because I finished reading it, mostly out of curiosity . Before picking up this book I'd only read the first in this series, and that was quite some time ago. I do think this series would be more enjoyable if read from start to finish. That being said, it does work fine as a stand-alone.

Mackenzie's quick wit, along with the combination of toughness and insecurity, made for a standout heroine. While I liked Andrew Rook's character, I didn't feel much of a connection to him. This is one of the instances in which I think reading the prior books first would have made for a better experience here.

The plot held my interest and moved at a good pace. I thought the ending was a little too convenient. An intelligent criminal who has gone undetected for decades would, in my opinion, be a bit more difficult to catch. Aside from that small matter, I enjoyed the overall story. ( )

Something about this just didn’t work for me. It started out with some promise, and I thought we were heading into some big conspiracy story. Instead, we get a mostly crazy guy who conveniently has past ties to our main character. A master criminal, he definitely was not. Also, since Mac and Rook already know each other when the story opens, we miss out on the chase that is often the best part of a romantic suspense. It’s only a matter of time before they fall together again, especially since the reason why they were apart isn’t particularly harsh. And to add insult to injury, their reunion happens way too soon. Took all the fun out of the suspense. I’m starting to think that maybe Neggers isn’t my cup of tea. ( )

Andrew Rook focused on a seed that had broken loose from a thin slice of lemon in his ice water because if he didn't distract himself, he was going to jump across the polished, black lacquered table and throttle J. Harris Mayer, the would-be informant who had set up this meeting.
