First Indian on the Moon has moments of wit, charm, heartbreak, and desolation. The pieces that most moved me are the interlinked prose poems, where the end of each word is the start of the next. The breaking in of history into the present, and the unflinching gaze of the speaker of the poems on reservation life, are given space in these pieces to recapitulate and call the reader's attention to societal injustice and personal heartbreak.
