In this latest installment in the Bakeshop mystery series, Jules and friends enjoy planning for the huge Halloween celebration that takes place in Ashland, Oregon. As they prepare their yummy food offerings, they also prepare costumes and accessories for the spooky night of fun. When Jules finds a murdered man in a dragon costume outside the bakeshop, she uses her thinking skills and conversational skills to assist law enforcement in trying to solve the crime. The story also contains some very interesting and unique subplots of antique thievery, animal actors and their intense humans, Shakespearean mischief, and fall fellowship. Suspects abound, as well as means, motives, and opportunities. The book ends with festive descriptions of warm gatherings as well as hints of things to come in the next novels. Readers who are familiar with the series will probably enjoy catching up with their "friends" who appear in all the novels. The characters are what really make this series. My one complaint about this novel is the endlessly tedious descriptions of how to bake the goodies, as well as the silly banter amongst the bakeshop staff and the descriptions of attire and settings. I think the book would have stood on its own merit without all this filler. Just put the recipes at the end of the book. However, I have read each book in the series, and while some are better than others, I will continue along with reading the new installments as they are published. While part of a series, this book can be read as a standalone, as there is enough detail woven into the story for readers new to the series to get caught up. I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own. After the towns annual Halloween parade, Jules finds the body of a man right in front of her bakeshop, dressed in a dragon costume. Naturally Jule's gets drawn into the investigation. along with her sidekick, Lance. This was a fun quick read with likeable main characters and plenty of red herrings. I was surprised by who the killer turned out to be. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this free ARC to read and review. The 17th mouth-watering mystery in the Bakeshop mystery series, once again, does not disappoint. This fun series set in small town Ashland, Oregon, has a Halloween theme when, during Halloween festivities, Torte bakeshop owner, Juliet Capshaw, discovers a dead dragon in front of her shop. This time, besides Halloween, the town's Shakespeare theater and its members, including its canine cast members, play a role in the mystery. Terrific plot, as always, and delightful characters make this a superb mystery for cozy fans. Highly recommended!! Halloween has started in Ashland Oregon and everyone is descending onto Main Street for the annual Halloween Parade. Most everyone is in costume and a “victim” had been found right outside of Torte Bake Shop. An investigation begins and just as usual Jules and Carlos are right in the middle of it.
The story starts out well but ends up having too much going on. It was hard for me to keep up with the characters and all that was going on. I realize this may be because is it book 17 in the series and this is the first one I have read. The end was very interesting also somewhat predictable.
The book did fall a bit short for me but it is still a fun filled sweet Halloween mystery story.
I am excite that I found this series as I love a sweet good mystery series. I am ready to start reading book one and more. I also love the fact that the author lives in Northern California. Ellie Alexander is from the Pacific Northwest and many of her books are set in that geographic location. I love it as I know those areas very well.
