Hercules Poirot se ve envuelto en un peligroso juego con un asesino en serie que le envÃa cartas en las que le revela la fecha y el lugar donde cometerá su próximo crimen. Firma sus misivas con las letras ABC y cerca del cadáver deja una guÃa de ferrocarriles abierta por la página correspondiente a la ciudad donde se ha cometido el asesinato. La primera vÃctima es Mrs. Alice Ascher, la dueña de un estanco en Andover, la segunda es Miss Betty Barnard, una joven camarera de Bexhill, mientras que la tercera vÃctima es Sir Carmichael Clarke, un médico multimillonario de Churston. La policÃa arresta a un sospechoso, aunque Poirot piensa que no se trata del verdadero homicida. Poirot recibe una carta en la que se le anuncia un asesinato que será cometido en Andover. Al pie una firma: ABC. En el dÃa señalado, efectivamente, la estanquera de Andover, Mrs. Ascher, es asesinada. Nuevas cartas y asesinatos se suceden con un riguroso orcen alfabético, siguiendo por la B de Miss Barnard, por la C de Carmichael Clarke en Churston.
