Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:Can Lady Philippa Ware forgive the man who once shattered all her youthful dreams? Discover the passionate and heartwarming new novel on the redemptive power of love from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh.
Philippa, elder daughter of the Earl of Stratton, grew up eagerly anticipating a glittering debut and a brilliant marriage. Then her brother caught their father out in a clandestine affair and denounced him publicly. The whole family was disgraced, and Philippa??s hopes grew dim, then were fully shattered when she overheard the dashing, handsome Marquess of Roath viciously insult her upon learning of her father??s identity. Only years later does Philippa find the courage to go to London at last to meet the ton. She is an instant success and enjoys a close friendship with the granddaughter of a duke. Only one man can spoil everything for her, but surely he will not be in London this year.
The Duke of Wilby is nearing death and has tasked his grandson and heir, Lucas Arden, Marquess of Roath, with marrying and producing a son before it is too late. Lucas, who usually shuns London, goes there early in the Season in the hope of finding an eligible bride before his grandparents come and find one for him. He is instantly attracted to his sister??s new friend, until that young lady asks a simple question: ??Remember me?? And suddenly he does remember her, as well as the reason why the daughter of the Earl of Stratton is the one woman he can never marry??even if his heart tells him she is the only woman he wants.
Unfortunately for Philippa and Lucas, the autocratic duke and his duchess have other ideas and believe them to be perfect for each other. They will simply not take no for an answer. Telling Philippa the full truth is the hardest thing Lucas has ever faced, and the discovery of it will change them both before they discover the heal

When Lucas Arden was younger he insulted Phillipa, the elder daughter of the Earl of Stratton and she believes that they can never marry, he also has his reasons for disliking her family, but there's an attraction between them, something they can't ignore, along with their families, particularly his grandfather who wants him to be married and have a heir before he dies and he sees Phillipa as the ideal wife.
Inevitably it all works out but honestly I wanted to lock them in a room and urge them to use their words. ( )

I loved this as it felt very true to my favorite Balogh novels, although there was a lot to get through considering we didn’t hear what the big secret was until the halfway point. Her themes around family are wonderful, and I kind of adored how Philippa fell for the family before she fell for Lucas. Their story and the conclusion were both lovely and exactly where they needed to be, and I look forward to the next one bringing more of these two families together. ( )

I'm always thrilled to get a new Balogh book, but this one was just okay. The story felt wrapped in cotton, in that I just couldn't get a good feel for the characters. I was 'told' often how they felt about each other, but I never seemed to be 'shown' it. Indeed, scenes were often contradictory.
While I enjoyed the Duke and Duchess of Wilby, it seemed odd that they had the final say on so many things. Yes, Luc is dutiful, but why did Pippa feel obligated to obey them? I often felt like I was missing crucial information.
Anyway, it was more of a miss for me, but I'm very anxious to read the next book in the series (Ben and Jenny's story). ( )

Pippa’s conflict!

The fallout from Devlin Ware accosting his father publicly at the village Grand Fete was his sister Lady Phillipa Ware, elder daughter of the late Earl of Stratton, being stunned when she heard herself being referred to as spoiled goods by Lucas Arden, the Marquess of Roath. That rejection decided Pippa about not making her presentation and come out for four years. Other things stood in the way as well, but this was the deciding factor. Pippa could not stand the thought of being given the cut direct by other members of the ton.
Luc’s grandfather, the Duke of Wilby, wants him to marry. It seems the Duke has set his sights on Pippa, whom Luc knows wants nothing to do with him. He’s agonising over his immature response of the past, but might there also be something else going on?
I was somewhat dismayed by the beginning of the novel, it seemed somewhat flat, but by the end I loved it. I also grew to adore Luc’s grandparents the Duke and Duchess of Wilby.
Let me just say the ending had the tears flowing!

I’m torn on this series — on the one hand, classic Mary Balogh: lovely characters, solid romance, interesting families. On the other hand, you kind of have to accept that the premise won’t really make any sense unless you also accept that the characters are very emotional and totally invested in hanging on to past misunderstandings until they’ve beaten them to death. Not my favorite series, but still glad to see the next one.
