Marie Therese Beaudet Martin grew up grateful for the paper mill that dominated the economy of her small Maine town. It was only years later, while working as a nurse, that she and her physician husband Joseph Edward "Doc" Martin came to believe that the area's sky-high rates of lymphoma, pediatric cancer, and lung disease was caused by the smoke and chemicals billowing from the mill's tall stacks both day and night. Together, they sounded an alarm no one wanted to hear--and began a decades-long fight to expose the devil's bargain the community had struck with the mill, a fight that Terry continued even after Doc himself fell victim to cancer. Martin's memoir, And Poison Fell From the Sky, includes a foreword by Kerri Arsenault, author of the book Mill Town, which includes Martin and her husband.… (más)

This was a good read for Earth Day. It‘s a memoir by Marie Therese Martin detailing her life growing up and raising a family in Maine‘s Cancer Valley. She really drives home the fact that our tendency is to ignore the truth when it will impact our paycheck.

I received a copy of this ARC from LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. ( )

Although MarieTherese was a good storyteller, it felt like not a lot happened throughout the book. She told us that her husband was abuse, but did not provide stories of how he was abusive. She told us that she was an environmental activists, but did not provide stories of her activism. Ultimately the book seemed more like a therapy e change.

And the Poison Fell From the Sky is about Marie’s life living in Rumford, Maine.
A paper mill was built in the area of Maine (Rumford and Mexico) that would become known as Cancer Alley.
Marie is a nurse in the area who marries a doctor. They will spend their adult lives fighting the paper mill and fighting for control oversight. The Oxford Paper Company was a self-reporting company. There was no oversight to make sure leaks and explosions were reported. There also was no oversight to audit the reported amount of emissions being released into the air and local water ways.
Living in an area of Louisiana (Iberville Parish) that was once considered another Cancer Ally due to all the chemical plants, I could relate to a lot of Marie Martin’s story. ( )

This book has an important subject that affects people everywhere -- pollution that affects the health of humans and animals and perhaps poisons part of our planet for eternity. There is more of it than we realize and this is one true story of Rumford, Maine and how a paper mill took a heavy toll on the local population. Industry continues to poison people today.

The author and others knew this and stood up for her neighbors and humanity against the big money of big business and the greed that exceeds imagination in that people are considered disposable.

As well, this is part of Terry's story, and it wasn't good even before she knew she and her family were being poisoned. She is such a resilient soul and we owe people like her and other brave people who speak up and attempt to make things better. ( )

A personal memoir that I did not find that interesting - abusive husband that she sticks with. A small paen to her Acadian ancestry. Her crusade against the pollution of the paper mill would have been more interesting. Her case rests on anecdotal evidence and would have been better served with Appendices with some evidence or statistics supporting her position. I have no doubt that the mill's pollution contributes to health risks, but would have been better supported with some hard evidence. ( )
