Accidental detective!

Take an improbable situation—a young woman who takes on her dead father’s debts, pays them off working as a teacher in a school in the Swiss alps, suddenly discovers she’s the heir to her wealthy grandfathers fortune (including houses and cars apparently). The condition is that she’ll take on his work of “providing advice“ (detecting for those who need help) for anyone who asks. It’s all very subtle and it seems they’ll all be wealthy types.
At first I went ho hum. The beginning was a tad too contrived. After it’s a bit of a fairytale beginning. However as we progressed into the story I became quite interested. There’s a body or two—not in the library but in interesting places nevertheless. And then there’s the family of the young woman Atalanta has chosen to help—all very dramatic with an overbearing mother who’s not going to let a little thing like a dead body stop the wedding. Not to mention the Comte, his ward, and his previous mistress. (Of course she’s an opera singer!)
Atalanta’s first case could well be her last. And what of the mysterious Raul?
An enjoyable cosy mystery set in the 1930’s with a heroine who has the world at her feet and the money to go wherever.

Atalanta had a challenging life as motherless child with an impulsive father who died indebted to many because of his anger towards his father. She worked to pay off his debts and then worked at an exclusive girl's school. Then came the telegram from her grandfather's solicitor. Turns out that she inherited more than houses, cars, and money, but also an ally in the form of his manservant and an innate ability to investigate thorny problems. In this first book in series, she is contacted by a young woman who has received a disturbing note questioning the integrity of the man she has been contracted to marry. Let the sleuthing begin and the twists and red herrings multiply until the Grand Confrontation! Excellent read!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book copy from HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter via NetGalley. ( )

When the news that would change her life forever reached Miss Atalanta Ashford, she was climbing the rocky path to the ruins of an old Swiss burg, fantasizing those tattered grey remains were the white marble columns of the Parthenon.
