Tembo leads her herd through a day’s adventure … getting food, water, wallowing in mud , fending off a bull elephant that’s been causing trouble.

This is a lovely picture book introducing fabulous and fascinating elephants to the younger set. The fictionalized story line of one herd is supplemented by factual information. I thoroughly enjoyed it. ( )

Tembo Takes Charge is a great informational book about elephants. Tembo Takes Charge is a bout an elephant named Tembo that guides its herd through daily life on the African savanna. Tembo is the oldest of the herd so she looks after the herd and the herd follows her guidance. This conceptual book gives a lot of interesting information about elephants and the how they survive.
I particularly liked this informational book because I liked how it was a story about an elephant named Tempo but at the same time there are little informational notes on the pages stating information about elephants and their survival needs. The book had a lot of colorful photographs of live elephants. I think this a fun informational book for children to read when learning about elephants.
After reading the book Tembo Takes Charge my second grade class would participate in making their own elephant in arts and crafts. After making their elephant each student will write on a side note about something they learned about elephants and paste the side note on their elephant. After completing the arts and crafts the students will share their elephant with the class and the information they have wrote about their elephant.
