Dan Brown's two Robert Langdon novels would be an excellent supplement for students wanting a less academic read on the side. They focus on symbologist Robert Langdon, and they provide a gripping tale of mystery, murder, and history. These books actually do a lot of teaching, both historically, geographically, and artistically, and I would feel very comfortable handing these books to my students to read. Not only do they read well, but they force the reader to critically think about not only the choices the author is making, but also the choices Langdon makes. This book is very unique in that way... the reader truly feels like they are experiencing the same thrills they are reading about. Simply an extraordinary pair of novels for people of all ages, but especially a high school student looking for a pleasure read.
