I hadn't read one of these summaries before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I also haven't read the book this summary is summarizing, so I'm not sure how qualified I am to assess it, but I will say that this was quite brief and appears to sort of list the concepts that I assume are covered in more depth and with more context in the book. I think this summary would help you decide whether or not to invest time in the actual book, so probably helpful to read beforehand, but I don't think this would be much help after reading the book - it isn't really structured like a study guide or a cliffnotes version.

This is a review of the Battle for the American Mind by Peter Hegseth (6/14/22, 288 pages). Book Summary Publishing has condensed the information in the original book to a succinct in-depth presentation of the key points and facts presented in the original book. Since I have not read the original, my review is about Book Summary Publishing's summary, which I found to be a very highly recommended and helpful survey of the original material.

What Book Summary Publishing provides is a three fold advantage. An overview of the original material is presented in a clear, accessible manner. This brief analysis allows the reader to learn the contents of the original to either have the thumbnail sketch of what it is about to enhance following discussions of the topics and/or decide if they want to take the time to read the original material. This can be especially helpful in contemporary, topical books. The book provides an overview, summaries of each chapter, background information, and discussion questions at the end.

This is only my second foray into a summary of a book in lieu of reading the original and it was actually a positive experience. The original book discusses how the progressive Left has slowly infiltrated and changed the education system in the country and how to collectively return it to the quality education that used to be provided. This is actually a topic I have first hand experience with, so it was highly interesting to read this summary of Hegseth's book. What the summary does is condense the information into the key, relevant points which allows you to follow discussions about the topic with ease.

What follows is my review of the Book Summary Press 'ebook' summary of the 'paper' book, Battle for the American Mind : Uprooting a Century of Miseducation by Pete Hegseth with David Goodwin, published at New York by Broadside Books in 2022. The summary begins with a 'note to reader' followed by a disclaimer:

“Battle for the American Mind by Peter Hegseth is about how the progressive Left slowly but effectively moved to neutralize the basis of the American republic and how to collectively return the nation's education system to what it used to be. This book is for everyone, especially for parents who think it is important to raise their children to be wise, virtuous, and logical citizens. The book identifies a key element of western culture and education that has been removed from progressive education by the progressives – the classical Christian paideia. Progressives have taken over the American educational system by controlling the "commanding heights" of education. As a result, American children are trained to be devoid of reason and virtue. They are trained to be workers and not leaders. Reversing this reality will require parents to radically reorient their children's education. The lost philosophy of education must be brought back to its rightful place. It is a type of education that is grounded in 2 virtue and excellence. It is called Classical Christian Education. You've never heard of it? You are not alone.”

This reviewer's comments: The American progressive school system needs an overhaul. This means a return to emphasis on developing skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic in a cultural setting that recognizes parental authority and Judeo-Christian ethical and religious principles. The Greek 'paideia' is fundamental. 'Paideia' derives from 'paidos': upbringing of a child, which word is related to 'pedagogy' and to 'pediatrics'. (from Mortimer J. Adler, The Paideia Proposal, NY: Macmillan, c1982).

Extending this idea to the Latin 'humanitas' or 'the humanities' in English, results in the idea of learning that ought to be, as American philosopher John Dewey articulated, paraphrasing President Abraham Lincoln, “by the People, for the People, and of the People.” The responsibility for education of citizens has transferred, over the past century or more, from parents and parochial schools to a higher, more centralized secular authority, the government at every level: city, county, state, and federal. As Robert Ulich wrote in his History of Educational Thought, NY : American Book Company, c1950 at p. 343: “The state, however human and liberal its leaders may be, is by its very character involved in conflicts of power. And under the pressure of circumstances, the more it must count on the co-operation of all its citizens and centralize their activities, the more it will be inclined to use education as an instrument of politics.”

I recommend Pete Hegeth's Battle for the American Mind to readers concerned about centralized government control of K-12 education. I do not recommend the Book Summary Publishing's 'Summary' of the Hegseth book. The 'Summary' is not written carefully, lacks supporting references, and frankly is too wordy to be considered a summary. ( )

This book was received by me for the promise of an honest review of the book. I should also add that I am reviewing the summary of the original book as opposed to the book that the summary was based upon.

The author proports this book to be a dissection of the American education system, its flaws, and ideas for improvement. The case is not made within the writing of the summary. Throughout the summary, there are instances of opinion delivered without context and statements of fact that are missing any data or evidence to support those statements of fact. This is disturbing as the author makes a great effort to appeal that logic has been removed from American education and yet uses no logic to support the accusations.

When logic is attempted, it is often circular in nature (from chapter 6, "Postmodernism and critical race theories are the basis for more modern prescriptive theories such as LGBT glorification, the sexual revolution, and critical race theory.") or based on the author's definitions of Greek terms such as Arete, Logos, and Telos that differ from their dictionary definitions. There are also several examples of poor editing of the text (from chapter 8, "But virtue is not a synonym for virtue.").

In short, this summary of the original book is poorly written, lacks evidence, and does not reach the goals set forth by the author. It is possible that each of these issues are addressed within the original book, but that book has not been made available to me.

This is an interesting volume; very short (30+ pages) with very summary information for each chapter of the underlying book. It is difficult to determine how well original book has been summarized in this volume (without having read the original), however, I believe the authors have conveyed the key concepts contained in the original, however, some of the underlying logic and flow of these concepts may not be well presented due to the purposeful brevity of the chapters. (if they have been accurately presented - it would appear that the original book is a convoluted mess of ideas carelessly spread out across the chapters with little thought or reason to accompany the concepts - just a lot of conjectures and "yelling" of headlines and potential media snippets of artificial concepts devoid of logic.

This summary volume is still intriguing, and I would like to see a volume presented that I have read in the original.
