A gifted trainer in a time women are not allowed to race, Nora Fenton prefers horses to men. They're easier to handle, they're more reliable, and they never tell her what to do. After her father's passing, Nora is determined to save her struggling horse farm, starting with entering her prize colt into the harness races at the 1905 Mississippi Fair. If she wins, she may have a chance at independence. But when a stranger arrives and starts asking disconcerting questions, she suspects he may have other motives than unseating her in the training job that is rightfully hers.Silas Cavallero will do whatever it takes to solve the mystery of his father's death--even if it means training an unwieldy colt for Nora, who wants nothing more than to see him gone. But when mysterious accidents threaten their safety and circumstances shrouded in secrets begin unlocking clues to his past, Silas will have to decide if the truth is worth risking ruining everything for the feisty woman he's come to admire.… (más)

This book was pretty good. I liked the setting and the horses of course, but some of the characters made me want to shake them for their stupidity and downright denseness. How ridiculous that at one time women trainers weren't allowed or thought of as proper! Although we don't have horses, caring for our animals is one of my favorite jobs. I also love working in my home and caring for our family, but it's a balance of both indoor and outdoor work. Some of these older prejudices against women seem so out there, but I know that sometimes they were reality even as foolish as they were.
I loved Nora's caring but fiery spirit and how she tried to stand up for herself, Arrow, and her family's farm.

This author is new to me, but I'll definitely be checking out her other books soon!

Thank you to the author, publisher and LibaryThing's Early Reviewers program for the complimentary paperback of this book. I appreciate it! :)

Years after his father perished under the hooves of a stallion, Silas returns to the scene of the accident with many questions. Questions that those who were present cannot or are unwilling to answer. A search for work leads him to Emberwild Horse Farm, where more mystery lives. Nora, whose father recently died, is a fiercely independent and progressive woman who wants to take charge of Emberwild and race her favorite colt, Arrow.
After several mishaps, Silas surmises: “There is something very wrong at Emberwild.”But who can Nora trust? It will take both of them to figure out the secrets that haunt Emberwild. “Sooner or later, one of them would trip and the lies-or perhaps the truth- would spill. Then she could only pray the secrets of Emberwild would not leave them all with broken hearts and shattered hopes.”
Intrigue, mysteries, manipulation with a dash of romance and underlying faith make this an outstanding book by Ms. McGee.

If you enjoy women's rights stories, this book is definitely for you! I feel like this story focused heavily on it. As somebody who doesn't prefer those kinds of stories, it ended up being better than I expected.

My only compliment is that Nora was a little rebellious and set on disliking men in an obnoxious way. I think the only reason it got under my skin is because I went through my own season of disliking men. I grew up in an area where there were many bad men, so I viewed them as the enemy--ignorant and corrupt. However, I've now learned that not all men are bad. Men were created by God. When they lean into God, they are an example of strength, love, and support. Good men deserve tons of appreciation!

With that said, Nora learned the same lesson. Not all men are bad. Due to that aspect, this book has earned four stars. I wish that Nora's lesson would have been more prevalent, but I still enjoyed this story! The ending pleasantly surprised me!

Content warnings:
• several mentions of people throwing out obscenities or wanting to, but no words are actually said.
• several uses of the word swear
• several mentions of whiskey
• super frequent uses of the word fool (in its many variations)
• frequent uses of the word idiot (in its many variations)
• one use of the word lecherous
• side characters use tobacco
• short passionate kisses
• the emotions of falling in love (aka: mentions of electric feelings, wanting to know what his/her lips would feel like, etc.)

Trigger warnings:
Death. The emotions that come along with death.

As a disclaimer, I may be missing some content or triggers warnings. I read this book while I was sick. 😅 If I missed any, let me know below!

Oh, my, this book has so many things that I enjoy, including intriguing characters, a mystery needing to be solved, and romantic feelings waiting to be explored! Women horse trainers weren't the norm in 1905 and women farm managers weren't either but independent Nora Fenton was determined to do both. What she couldn't do was race her own horse! Silas Cavallero seemed to be her answer but did he have his own secret agenda? Would he help her, or bring her even more problems?

McGee's use of innuendos, twists and turns kept me flipping the pages to uncover the many secrets and enjoy the attraction between Nora and Silas. The Secrets of Emberwild is a captivating story of second chances and forgiveness, and I recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Revell Reads. There was no obligation for a positive review. ( )

I instantly cared for this little girl who loved horses, and the mystery surrounding an unexplained accident. This gal was a woman ahead of her time, she wasn’t afraid to go against societies rules which didn’t approve of her training horses or any animal for that matter. Oh, my don’t even think about riding a horse in a race.

1905 women shouldn’t think the way Nora did, but her father saw her gifting and let her train the horses. Things changed when her father died, and Uncle Amos stepped in to manage the horse farm. He lets Nora do what she’d been doing before with limitations. He was determined for her to marry well, fulfilling Nora’s social obligations.

If this weren’t enough to wrap her head around, she is still trying to make heads or tails of her father’s secret. She told no one about what her father whispered in her ear before he died. She tries to encourage her mother to embrace being an independent woman, she knows it could be possible.

Amos hired Silas to help train horses on the farm. Silas only purpose in taking this job was to find out what really happened to his father, that caused him to die. Was it really an accident? It was a mystery Silas had to solve.

I was mesmerized by what it took to run a ranch, train, and bred horses. The love of everything horse related shines through this feisty strong-willed young lady, who is mission minded, as she wrestles with her fears and longs for independence and freedom, and to live out her dream of managing the ranch.

I enjoyed the main characters and the minor ones as the mystery surrounding Emberwild, unfolds. I liked the unexpected twists and turns as secrets rise to the surface and things become clearer to the reader and to Nora and Silas. What would they do with these secrets?

This is a sweet heartwarming, story filled with family, loss, faith, and hope, oh, and let’s not forget the horses. It’s also a story of a mother and daughter finding their way to independence after the man they trusted deceived them. I liked how the mystery added to the drama. This is an engaging read and one that would work for your next book club meeting.
