Basically a rip-off of Georgette Heyer's An Infamous Army, with a Regency romance in Brussels at the time of the Battle of Waterloo. Heyer's description of the battle was so well-done and accurate it has been used at military academies in studying the battle. I haven't pulled my copy off the shelf to compare it to the very detailed description of the battle here, but there is no way this author didn't make use of it extensively in this story. Once we got to the battle, the personal interactions of the main characters fell into the background and the plot threads wrapped up very quickly and impersonally.

And the pdf copy was terrible. Double consonants were all printed as the first consonant and a space, really interfering with getting into the story. Other proofing errors as well, like incorrect homonyms used. ( )

Lady Janine Derrington has been shunned by Society because she broke her engagement to the Duke of Rossmuir. When he offers to assist her to keep the gossip from himself, she cautiously goes along with it. Will Janine regret his help or will they find a way to regain the love they once had?

I had mixed feelings about this story. While I did appreciate how the author showed that it was a serious thing to break an engagement, I never quite understood why the break happened in the first place. Janine claims she saw him kissing another girl but he says it was just a misunderstanding. How could that happen? What did she see? For the majority of the book, they had such an up and down relationship that I was not hoping they would marry.

The details of the time were very good. It was easy to see that the author did research. It was strange to me the chapters that would appear that were not focused on our two main characters. They felt out of place even though they were well-written.

Overall, this wasn’t a bad read. Some places were a little boring but I am glad I read it. I think readers who enjoy stories based on historical fact with lots of historical details will enjoy this one.

I received a free copy from the author via the LibraryThing Review program. I am reviewing of my own choice and all opinions expressed are my own. ( )
