"Lynn Walker watched her dad, John, deteriorate from Miami undercover narcotics agent to drug smuggler, from protective father to monster-a very charming monster. By the time she was in high school, her dad was in prison for smuggling 12,000 pounds of drugs. There, John made a connection with a powerful Colombian drug lord. Within months of being paroled, John waltzed back into his kids' lives, dishing out pure, Colombian cocaine to Lynn and launching her brother's coke-dealing career. After a few years of abusing coke together, Lynn lost everything and was forced to choose between her life and her father"--… (más)

Midnight Calling is a self-published memoir by Lynn Walker. The memoir describes her life from early childhood with an adoring father to his becoming an addict and drug smuggler, her addiction, and her transformation into a successful and contributing member of society. I applaud her decision to enter into therapy, to explore the reasons behind her addiction, and the strength it took for her to make her arduous journey to a career that is fulfilling and a person who is free of drug and alcohol controlling her life. But most rewarding to read is her journey to understand how her father's rejection shaped her life, how she learned how it impacted her, and how she grew to see herself as worthy without his affirmation. The book is well written and the story interesting. ( )

Very interesting to read from a girl's view of addiction and trying to get her father's love. I was surprised at how addicted she was to drugs and alcohol at such a young age. She was pretty thorough about what got her addicted; most of the book was about that. I felt the ending was rushed to her adult life and coming out of addiction as I would have liked to have read more about that but her discussion of some of the therapy was thought provoking to read.

Thank you for providing me with this early reviewers copy for my honest feedback, LibraryThing. This book was so incredibly moving. I couldn't put it down.

I love that she doesn't write her past with disdain or lessen it. She just presents everything honestly and explains how she felt in those moments. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't write too much more. I do, however, want to touch on the fact that it's amazing to hear tidbits about how her therapy sessions affected how she sees herself and her problems. Her change in how she views what she can bring to relationships - both romantic and platonic - was incredibly moving. ( )

The Story:

I hate to say it but I was a little disappointed in this book. I didn’t realize it is not narrated by the writer and I have trouble connecting with the book like this because it doesn’t feel as personal to me. Also, I thought there would be more about the father and the smuggling and her role in it but in a great amount of the book she is estranged from her father My last thought is how does she remember so much in such great detail with all of the drugs/alcohol/blacking out she has had in her past. Maybe it’s because I have such a sucky memory I can’t fathom how she managed to recall all of this.

I can't imagine the courage it took to tell this story and it was intense to say the least. It was a wonderful read!
