The New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners returns with a witty and effervescent novel about what happens when two people with everything on the line are thrown together by science??or is it fate? Perfect for fans of The Rosie Project and One Plus One.
Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. After all, her father was never around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn't "father material" before her daughter was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close but working constantly to stay afloat is hard...and lonely.

But then Jess hears about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that's predicted to change dating forever. Finding a soulmate through DNA? The reliability of numbers: This Jess understands.

At least she thought she did, until her test shows an unheard-of 98 percent compatibility with another subject in the database: GeneticAlly's founder, Dr. River Peña. This is one number she can't wrap her head around, because she already knows Dr. Peña. The stuck-up, stubborn man is without a doubt not her soulmate. But GeneticAlly has a proposition: Get 'to know him and we'll pay you. Jess??who is barely making ends meet??is in no position to turn it down, despite her skepticism about the project and her dislike for River. As the pair are dragged from one event to the next as the "Diamond" pairing that could launch GeneticAlly's valuation sky-high, Jess begins to realize that there might be more to the scientist??and the science behind a soulmate??than she thought.

4.5 stars .... I needed more! There was still a little more story to tell ( )

This book was lovely. As usual, CL knocks it out of the park. This one made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt. It was an instant comfort read. If you like feel good romance, I recommend this one.

I will say that I felt the sex scenes were subpar as far as dancing around the act using frilly wording that implied what was going on as opposed to direct descriptive language. This pulled me out of the story ever so slightly because all of the angst and the science used direct descriptive language. ( )

I’ll start with the caveat that I truly hate the term soulmate. There’s almost nothing that can make me roll my eyes harder. So even picking this us was a stretch for me but I like the author so I did.

It was fine. I actually did like the idea of “predetermination” influencing the fate of the dating couples for good or for bad. It’s a lot like the books The Immortalists in that way. But the think I like most about romance novels is the WHY of people falling in love and this had some of that but not quite enough. I get why she fell for him - he was pretty perfect but I couldn’t see any reason why he would love her. ( )

I will preface this review by saying that the only book I've read by Christina Lauren was "The Unhoneymooners" and it was HILARIOUS (the first half was anyway), so I had high hopes for this one!

The Soulmate Equation isn't quite as funny as The Unhoneymooners, but it still had it's funny moments for sure!

My biggest note is that at about 35%, I felt like earlier on, Jess and River could have hated each other more. Jess's negative feelings towards River seem.... inflated, compared to her actual interactions with him.

Also, what is an IPO and a CSO? Sure I could look it up, but it would have been good to have it explained in the book ;)

I love that there's a cat in the story, I love the science and math stuff, and, since I recently read "The One" by John Marrs, I love that it's SO different from that story!!! (The only thing similar is the whole DNA-love aspect.).

Without giving anything away, I would have liked to know a solid answer about the number at the end, rather than just hinting at it.

This book could have EASILY earned a 5-star rating if it was just a bit funnier (I love the COM in a rom-com), and if earlier on River and Jess had more negative interactions to warrant her "I feel like I want to commit a felony when I think about him" thoughts ;) ( )

Idk if this 4 stars is because this was the first CLo I have ever enjoyed from beginning to end in about 3 yrs or not, but I had a really good time with this book.

Jess and River are magic but tbh the more magic coupling are Jess and Fizzy and their banter and love just SHINES, and a part of me can't help feeling this is the duo i.e CLo writing subconsciously about their IRL sismance which makes me so happy.

But genuinely, this was a fun romcom filled with great characters and I had a blast reading everything. ( )
