This was different than I was expecting but overall enjoyable. It felt more like a fantasy book than a fairy tale, but I would have liked some more details for the world-building. It felt like a lot of background and general descriptions were missing. Overall, I enjoyed reading this and liked the concept. It could use a little more background information about the three sisters and better editing. Easy to read and fun to have the beast be a woman. I enjoyed the change of location to a North legend world as well as the swap of roles (female best, male beauty). The addition of loving family and more interaction with the "outside world" also made the story feel less insular. Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing. Storm and Solace: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling by Robin Woods is a gender bender. In this book, the female is the beast. Although instead of being a beast she's just been scarred by her sisters. I'm not sure what sort of creature she's supposed to be. It's an interesting take on the tale, but the author tells rather than shows them falling in love. I think a more detailed interaction with the main protaganists would have given the story more umph.Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing. This book would have been better with more editing/proofing. The farther along it got, the sloppier it was. A couple bothersome issues - the intro of the book was confusing, as the author doesn't say the characters are in the water, so you have to go back and reread the first couple of pages to understand where things are. The initial premise of why the curse was given was rather silly - someone has to eat dinner instead of looking for survivors of a wreck?! People who "crumble" instead of crumple - are they cookies? We never find out why the main villain hates the protagonist, etc.The idea of the story was decent, but the telling could've been better executed.
Storm and Solace by Robin Woods is an engaging fantasy adventure bringing a modern feel to the fairytale genre. In a world of moral ambiguities, a fallen goddess looks to right wrongs on her own terms, but she just didn’t count on falling in love along the way. An inventive retelling of Beauty and the Beast, this novel works entirely on its own terms, leaning towards the mythic quality of the original in a tale of battling immortals that draws on Norse mythology, but fans of the original will be delighted by Woods’ creative take on the classic fairytale. This well-composed story enjoys a rapid pace without ever feeling rushed, which is sure to please fans of light fantasy, romance, and fairytales alike. Storm and Solace: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling by Robin Woods is a fantastical and unique story that takes the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast and turns it right on its head while still staying true to the main plot. Saxa must learn to care for others if she ever hopes to regain her powers and once again join her sisters in the sea. However, she has hatred and disdain for humans, especially raiders. What I love most is watching Saxa’s character development throughout the novel especially as she deals with Brandr. He is somewhat of an anomaly to her and is a catalyst for change in her heart. I absolutely love how this story plays out and enjoy the creative creatures and abilities the author includes in the plot. I think this is definitely a book every paranormal fan will love. Richly detailed and written with care, Storm and Solace is a fantastic novel. Aptly named and well-executed, the story was an absolute joy to read. I finished the book in one sitting, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I love mythology, and Norse mythology is my favorite. The fact that Robin Woods created the perfect mixture of Nordic mythology and a modern version of Beauty and The Beast was astonishing to me. Atla was just as majestic as you would expect, and Brandr was just as human as you need him to be. The chemistry between Saxa and Brandr was off the charts. From their first meeting, after Saxa was cursed, to the very final scene, everything was well-thought-out. I would highly recommend this novel! Storm and Solace by Robin Woods is a whirlwind adventure. The pace is fast and there isn’t a moment when I felt the story was lacking momentum. This is an action-packed tale and the author had me intrigued from the first page. The main theme of the novel is love, specifically the love between two people where appearance doesn’t matter. The love between the main characters is unconditional and it is contrasted with the love between Geir and Awine, which is only built on what the other can offer. Saxa grows as a character, learning to forgive those who harmed her and also learning to love herself for who she is. I can say that I enjoyed Storm and Solace a bit more than the original story.
