Everything in Texas is bigger . . . even murder.
Meet Tres Navarretequila drinker, Tai Chi master, and unlicensed P.I., with a penchant for Texas-size trouble.
Jackson Tres Navarre and his enchilada-eating cat, Robert Johnson, pull into San Antonio and find nothing waiting but trouble. Ten years ago Navarre left town and the memory of his fathers murder behind him. Now hes back, looking for answers. Yet the more Tres digs, trying to put his suspicions to rest, the fresher the decade-old crime looks: Mafia connections, construction site payoffs, and slick politicians games all conspire to ruin his homecoming. Its obvious Tres has stirred up a hornets nest of trouble. He gets attacked, shot at, run over by a big blue Thunderbirdand his old girlfriend, the one he wants back, is missing. Tres has to rescue the woman, nail his fathers murderer, and get the hell out of Dodge before mob-style Texas justice catches up to him. The chances of staying alive looked better for the defenders of the Alamo.
Riordan writes so well about the people and topography of his Texas hometown that he quickly marks the territory as his own.Chicago Tribune

I must admit that towards the end I lost track of the plot and was confused as to how the bad guys fit in to the beginning part of the book. But it was an enjoyable ride with Mr. Navarre as company and enough Texan accents to sink a ship. San Antonio was aptly portrayed warts and all. Also I must commend the narrator for making the novel come alive. ( )

Jackson “Tres” Navarre and his enchilada-eating cat, Robert Johnson, pull into San Antonio and find nothing waiting but trouble. Ten years ago Navarre left town and the memory of his father’s murder behind him. Now he’s back, looking for answers. Yet the more Tres digs, trying to put his suspicions to rest, the fresher the decade-old crime looks: Mafia connections, construction site payoffs, and slick politicians’ games all conspire to ruin his homecoming. It’s obvious Tres has stirred up a hornet’s nest of trouble. He gets attacked, shot at, run over by a big blue Thunderbird—and his old girlfriend, the one he wants back, is missing. Tres has to rescue the woman, nail his father’s murderer, and get the hell out of Dodge before mob-style Texas justice catches up to him. The chances of staying alive looked better for the defenders of the Alamo.

I've spemt a ;lot of time in Texas, including San Antonio where thos book takes place. I'm glad I never encountered the kind of people that were characters in this book. While the plot of the book attempts to be sohpisticated, the chacters moist certanly are notl And that makes the whole thing rather inplausible. The only reason I rate the book as high as I do is the terrific job reading the audio book, and Riordan does a good job with character development.
A few less F-bombs would have gione a long way towards liking this more. I've always viewed excessive vulgarity to be a weakness in any writer. ( )

I'm a huge fan of Riordan's tween Percy Jackson series and have enjoyed many of his other characters, so I expected to like this just as well. However, though I realized that it was the first in the series and thus Riordan had lots of characters to introduce to us, the plot seemed over complicated, the pacing was uneven, and I'm not sure I like the protagonist. That said, there were many laugh-out-loud moments and I liked several of the characters whom I hope will be continued in the next books. I have the next in the series, so in the coming months I'll try that and hope the series improves. ( )
