Reminds me of those classic fairytale-esque tales deeply rooted in a special location with a challenging objective the characters must complete. Overall, A fun short story of teamwork and togetherness lengthened to a mini-epic with descriptions and dialogue.

Good fun for one and all in this anthropomorphized tale of a group of goats who have made an abandoned seaside castle in Wales. When the castle goes up for sale, the goats get together to do fundraisers including sandcastles contest and all sorts of activities and foodstuffs usually found in a country fair. A good time is had by all, and there's much more to the story besides the simple line drawing illustrations! I loved it!
I entered and won an e-book copy through LibraryThing.
Unfortunately, it is not on Goodreads or Barnes & Noble. ( )

This author has a delightful writing style; it's like sitting at the feet of an oral storyteller. It is the story of a herd of goats and their quest to find a new home. The goats are resourceful and creative and there are many instances of kindness in this story. The 24 goats have Welsh names and the author kindly provided pronunciation hints for most of them.
HOWEVER, the story starts with the goats finding out via newspaper article that they are all to be shot and killed because they have become a nuisance to the town. Although real goats can become a nuisance quickly, the goats in this story can talk with humans, buy and eat ice cream from local stores, read, write, draw, and play music. I find it very hard to justify how members of a community that are so human-like can be shot and killed. Furthermore, the solution is for the goats to engage in a fundraising campaign from the very townspeople who have demanded their killing. Now, there is a time and a place to discuss hard or disturbing topics with young children, but the author makes no space in this story for that kind of dialogue to happen. The goats come up with a plan and the whole topic is dropped as if the author is pretending it didn't happen. I read this book with my eleven year old, but when he was seven, we would have needed to have several conversations about the philosophy behind this and, honestly, I think he would have been too upset to finish it. At age eleven, he was unable to suspend his disbelief in order to appreciate the rest story. I couldn't meet a human character through the rest of the story without wondering if they had voted to have the goats exterminated behind their back, while being sweet to the goats' face.
Now, if your not hung up on the moral implications of killing human-like members of the community, then this would be a delightful book for children in early elementary. Really, after the first chapter, killing is NEVER mentioned again. Each chapter is an "episode", and the whole novel is pretty short. When compared to many of the other early reader chapter books flooding the US market, it's quite good, apart from the problem I already mentioned. If you don't think your child would be too sensitive, then this could be a good choice for your early reader. ( )

I enjoyed reading this book. It is a fun read and has some cute pictures. The story is cure and lets you use your imagination. I liked the pictures and they helped with the story. ( )

This book is a fun read. You will need your imagination and think of C.S Lewis style of writing when reading . It is very whimsical. I wish the illustrations were more detailed and colorful, but this is great book otherwise. ( )
